Peridot

August 17, 2021

Peridot is called the “gem of the sun” by Egyptians. Peridot has always been associated with light. Peridot is one of the birthstones for August. Other August birthstone are Spinel and Sardonyx.

FORMATION

Peridot is a mineral Olivine. Mohs Hardness ranges from 6.5 to 7 and its Toughness is Fair to Good.

Most Peridots formed deep inside the earth and these Peridots were delivered to the surface by volcanoes. Some also came to Earth in meteorites but these extraterrestrial Peridots are extremely rare and not likely currently available in jewelry shops

QUALITY FACTORS

The finest large peridots come from Myanmar, formerly Burma, and more recently from a source high in the Himalayas of Pakistan.

Color

Peridot’s color can be from yellowish green to greenish yellow. The most preferred peridot color is a richly saturated pure grass green without any hint of yellow or brown. Smaller carat Peridots tend to show yellowish green hues. Brown undertones lower the value of Peridot.

Clarity

The best quality Peridot has no eye-visible inclusions with perhaps a few tiny black spots that are visible under magnification. Other inclusions common in Peridot are reflective, disk-shaped inclusions called “lily pads.”

Carat

Peridot’s carat ranges from smaller sizes to bigger carat sizes.

Cut

Standard Peridot cuts for the jewelry industry include a wide range of shapes and sizes. Peridot is cut in a wide variety of shapes and cutting styles. The standard gem shapes such as round, oval, pear, cushion, triangle, and marquise shapes are available in Peridot.

TREATMENT

Peridot is rarely treated. However, there might be Peridots with visible fractures. Fractures can be filled to improve clarity.

CARE AND CLEANING

Warm, soapy water (using mild cleaning liquid) is the best method for cleaning Peridot. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are not recommended.
